Warrior for Life Fund Launches “Project Shield” to Support First Responders
In response to the growing mental health challenges facing first responders, the Warrior for Life Fund (WFLF) is launching Project Shield, a new initiative designed to build mental resilience and enhance performance under stress. The pilot program, launched in cooperation with the Berkshire County SRT (Special Response Team) and Pittsfield Police Department in Pittsfield MA, will serve as a model for future expansion to law enforcement and emergency first responder communities.
Developed in memory of Officer Michael Silver, a respected member of the Pittsfield Police Department who passed away in October 2024, Project Shield is both a tribute and a proactive response to the needs of those who serve on the front lines of crisis.
“Project Shield is our way of carrying forward Mike’s legacy—by providing his fellow service members with the strength and support they need to persevere and excel under pressure,” said Ryan Croley, Executive Director of the Warrior for Life Fund and retired Navy SEAL Captain.
The program features a six-session curriculum combining two in-person workshops with four virtual training modules, each lasting 90 minutes. These sessions are led by a team of specialists in trauma care, mental performance, and brain health:
- Jonathan Haynes – Program Manager and Mental Performance Coach
- Jessica Branham, LCSW – Trauma & Performance Specialist
- Annie Tamburello – Speech Pathologist and Certified Brain Injury Specialist
Prior to the program’s launch, WFLF conducted an initial survey of Pittsfield’s first responders to tailor the course’s content to their specific needs. The program’s goal is to provide participants with evidence-based strategies to navigate the psychological demands of their work.
Project Shield is a collaborative effort between WFLF, the Pittsfield Police Department, and a network of mental health professionals. The program will be closely evaluated for impact and scalability.
Officer Michael Silver served in the Pittsfield Police Department for 16 years. A Senior Tactical Operator on the Berkshire County Special Response Team and a decorated officer in the Traffic Unit, Silver was known for his dedication to service and community. Outside of work, he was a devoted husband and father who enjoyed woodworking and life on his family’s farm.
His sudden passing on October 20, 2024, just days after his 42nd birthday, left a profound void in the community.
