Warrior for Life Fund Builds ADA-Compliant Walkway to Support Adaptive Athletes

The Warrior for Life Fund has taken another major step in supporting adaptive athletes by constructing an ADA-compliant walkway between the Iceland Skating Center and the Human Performance Center. The new walkway addresses a significant accessibility challenge that has long prevented many athletes from fully utilizing both facilities.
Previously, adaptive athletes faced a 25-yard stretch of rough, uneven terrain, making travel between the two centers nearly impossible. Without an accessible path, many had to drive between locations, limiting their ability to seamlessly participate in training, rehabilitation and community activities. With the new walkway, they can now safely and easily access ADA-compliant resources at the Human Performance Center, including specialized training equipment, accessible restrooms and rehabilitation services.

For Dean Newcomb, Warrior for Life Fund sled hockey team coach, the walkway is a game-changer:
“The walkway is huge—it allows for the safe transport between the rink, exercise facilities and Human Performance Center,” Newcomb said. “No longer are our sled players required to travel onto the street just to access our facilities.”

For Laurie Wood, Warrior for Life Fund sled hockey team captain and USA Women’s National Sled Hockey Team member, the new ramp is more than just an accessibility feature—it’s an empowerment tool for adaptive athletes.
“The new walkway has been perfect for our disabled sled hockey players, providing seamless and safe access between the rink, Human Performance Center and gym,” Wood said. “This addition is not just about accessibility—it’s about empowering our athletes and my teammates to thrive as part of a community that values equal opportunity. They can focus on the game and training without barriers, and I think that’s awesome.”
This project was made possible through the generosity of Robin McGraw, Greg Ernst, and Vicky and Rich Appleby of Iceland Family Skating Center, whose contributions helped bring this critical infrastructure to life. Their support ensures that adaptive athletes have a safe and inclusive environment to train, recover and thrive.
However, projects like this are only possible with sustained monthly donations. Even small contributions of $5 to $10 per month play a crucial role in funding the Warrior for Life Fund’s mission, ensuring that veterans, active-duty service members and their families continue to receive the resources and support they need.
This new walkway is more than just a path—it’s a bridge to greater independence, opportunity and inclusion for those who have sacrificed so much. With continued community support, the Warrior for Life Fund remains dedicated to removing barriers and providing long-term opportunities for all.
