Adaptive Athlete and Sled Hockey Program

The Warrior For Life Fund’s Adaptive Athlete and Sled Hockey Program provides opportunities for adaptive athletes, veterans, active-duty service members and members of the broader Hampton Roads military community to participate in hockey, physical fitness and performance-based activities in an accessible and supportive environment.

Sled hockey is a central component of the program, giving athletes with physical disabilities the opportunity to play hockey while building strength, confidence, teamwork, and connection. WFLF works to reduce barriers to participation by providing access to the equipment, facilities, programming and community necessary for athletes to get on the ice and remain active.

Adaptive athletes also have access to the WFLF Human Performance Center in Virginia Beach, extending participation beyond the rink. The center provides opportunities to take part in fitness classes, strength and conditioning, weight training, mobility work and other physical-performance activities alongside the broader WFLF community. This integrated approach gives athletes a place to train, improve functional strength and fitness, and remain connected between hockey sessions.

Accessibility was incorporated into the Human Performance Center to better serve athletes with mobility limitations. The facility includes ADA-compliant bathrooms and accessible showers designed to accommodate hockey and sled hockey players, including athletes who may require additional space for wheelchairs, mobility devices or assistance while changing and preparing for training.

By connecting adaptive hockey, physical training and an accessible facility under the WFLF ecosystem, the program provides more than an opportunity to play a sport. It creates a consistent place for adaptive athletes to train, compete, build relationships and participate fully in the Warrior For Life Fund community.
